About This Book

도서 소개

A collection of twelve short stories that vividly depict relatable tales of real-life issues like going 'all in' on real estate, crypto investments, unemployment, school violence, and disaster relief funds.

Jeong Jin-young, the author behind 'Silence Warning’ which was adapted into JTBC’s popular drama series 'Hush', has published his first collection of short stories after 13 years of releasing novels since his debut. This collection contains 12 works, including the titular story. As a member of the ‘Wage Realism’ collective, the author has gathered works that deal with highly realistic and relatable themes. The stories candidly explore topics such as going all-in on real estate, crypto investments, disaster relief funds, AI, reselling, unemployment, school violence, bullying, rezoning, and thirsting for wealth. While addressing these issues head-on, the stories weave narratives that resonate with readers, offering profound reflections of ourselves today. The reality of our time, in which economic achievement defines every aspect of our lives, is no different than ‘a night of agony.’ Are we doomed to simply dance through this disaster-like existence, where countless desires collide? Each story in the collection shows unfiltered glimpses at the masses, filled with yearning as they struggle in hardship. Yet, we also find how love and understanding are valuable as strengths that keep us moving forward in such a world. These literary and evocative stories are crafted from situations that someone might be facing now, or scenarios we frequently come across in our daily lives, eliciting empathy, compassion, anger and sorrow. Reading one story is enough to pull you in so strongly that you end up reading all twelve in one sitting, each piece dealing with different topics, but ultimately connected as a portrait of our time. The author’s talent is clearly showcased in how he vividly portrays contemporary realities—such as social distancing during COVID, disaster relief funding issues, and the fluctuating real estate market—while drawing from diverse inspirations, including classic folktales, to enrich the stories. This is also why these works leave such a lasting impression. In the month of its publication, prominent reviews and interviews were featured on Chosun Ilbo, JoongAng Ilbo, Kyunghyang Shinmun, Korea Economic Daily, and Hankoyreh, with coverage by a total of 13 media outlets.
